<pre>KeySoft 7.01 Upgrade Instructions - BrailleNote Classic.

The Keysoft 7.01 upgrade requires that you are on Keysoft version 7.0. If your
machine has a previous version, then you will need to complete a separate installation
procedure to upgrade your unit to 7.0 before continuing with upgrading to Keysoft
7.01. If you do not have access to the version 7.0 upgrade, then please contact your
distributor.

This document contains instructions on how to install the KeySoft 7.01 upgrade on
your BrailleNote Classic or VoiceNote Classic. The PK and mPower models require
different instructions and different upgrade files. These are also available on the
HumanWare website at:
http://www.humanware.com/support/braillenote/keysoft_7.01_upgrade Ensure
that you are using the appropriate instructions and files for your model.

It is essential that you read all of the instructions before starting and you have them
available during the upgrade. You might like to transfer them to another computer or
emboss or print them.

Should something go wrong during the installation, troubleshooting information is
provided at the end of this document.

What you will need.

As well as your BrailleNote or VoiceNote Classic, you will need the following:

1. A CompactFlash (CF) card. You must use a CF card in the CF card slot on the
Classic for the upgrade. The CF card used for upgrading must be at least 64
megabytes in size and no more than 512 megabytes. It must be formatted as
described in the 'Formatting your CF card' section below.

2. A way of downloading the Keysoft 7.01 upgrade file and copying it onto the CF
card. You can download this file directly onto the CF using your Classic or download
it using a PC with an internet connection and a Compact Flash card reader. The file is
over 30 Megabytes in size, so if you are using a modem then it will take 1 to 2 hours
to download. If you have faster access, then it's preferable to use it.

Warnings.

The following warnings are very important. Please read and follow.

1. It is important that the CF card is formatted as required by the Classic installation
software. See the section, 'Formatting your CF card' below for instructions on how to
format the CF card.

2. Throughout the installation, your Classic must remain connected to the AC adapter
at all times.

3. Do not switch off, reset the unit, or remove the CF card at any time during the
upgrade except when instructed to do so.

4. Once the installation commences, there is no going back as this upgrade is not just
a software upgrade, it is a ROM image upgrade.

Formatting the CF card.

If you have received a copy of KeySoft 7.01 already on a CF card then go directly to
the section, 'Installing the Upgrade' below.

The Classic installation software requires the CF card to be formatted for FAT rather
than the more common FAT32. Formatting erases all existing data from the card; so
if your card contains data you want to keep, copy it to somewhere else before
proceeding. Formatting cannot be done on the Classic, so you will need access to a
PC with a Compact Flash card reader.

To format your CF card, follow these instructions:

1. Place the CF card into the reader and ensure that you have access to it.

2. There are many ways to format a CF card from within the Windows environment,
and only one is outlined here. If for some reason you need to use another method,
consult your Windows documentation.

3. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer, select the List View and move to the
drive that contains your CompactFlash card.

4. Open the File Menu and select the "Format" option.

5. A dialog will be presented with a number of different properties that can be set for
the Compact Flash card. The only one of interest is entitled "File System". Ensure
that FAT is chosen from this combo box and not FAT32.

6. Navigate to the "Start" button and press Enter.

7. You will be presented with a warning dialog, explaining that formatting will
destroy all information on the card. Choose OK to continue with the formatting.

8. Once the formatting is complete, the card is ready to be used in the upgrade
process.

Downloading the Upgrade File.

If you have received a copy of KeySoft 7.01 already on a CF card then go directly to
the section, 'Installing the Upgrade' below.

The Keysoft 7.01 upgrade file can be downloaded from our website. If you do not
have access to the internet then please contact your distributor.

To download and copy the file to your previously formatted CF card, follow these
instructions:

1. On a PC or your Classic, go to:
http://www.humanware.com/support/braillenote/keysoft_7.01_upgrade Select
the link, "KeySoft 7.01 Classic Download (build 25)".

2. Save the file (called NK.bin) to a known location on your PC, or if you are using
the Classic to download, then directly onto the previously formatted CompactFlash
card.

3. If you have downloaded onto a PC, copy the nk.bin file into the root directory (in
other words, not a subdirectory or folder) of the previously formatted CompactFlash
card.

Installing the Upgrade.

1. Ensure your Classic is switched on, the AC Adapter connected, and the Compact
Flash card is inserted in the card slot.

2. Ensure that there is no card in the PCMCIA slot.

3. Hold down dots 4 & 5 on the Braille keyboard (keys J and K on the Qwerty), and
press the reset button on the left side of the unit, just behind the on/off switch. Keep
holding dots 4 & 5 (J and K on the Qwerty) until the unit makes a sound, at which
point you can release the held down keys.

4. The upgrade process will start and you will hear beeps every 1 2 seconds for
around 30 minutes while the unit upgrades.

5. At the completion of the beeps, the new version of KeySoft will automatically
start. Check that Version 7.01 is shown as the version number.

Troubleshooting.

1. If you do not hear anything for 30 seconds or more try restarting the upgrade
procedure, following the instructions from the start.

2. Check that the Compact Flash card is correctly inserted into the slot at the back of
the unit.

3. Ensure that there is no "PDIBoot.exe" file on the Compact Flash card.

4. Ensure that the mains plug and AC adapter are inserted correctly.

5. If you have problems with your email, address book or planner after upgrading,
please contact your distributor.
